Wicklow Town Twinning

Twinning in Wicklow town started with school exchanges organised by Paula Kristiansen and Michele Parent then formally twinned with Montigny le Bretonneux in 1993. The Town then twinned with Porthmadog in 2006 after a long sailing association between Port Madog sailing club and Wicklow sailing club.  We then twinned with Eichenzell in 2013. Many groups including the two Soccer Clubs, the Rugby Club, the Golf Club, the Male voice choir, Irish dancers and the set dancers among others have been involved in cultural and sporting exchanges.

Wicklow Town

Wicklow town nestles at the mouth of the river Vartry surrounded by hills. There have been people living in Wicklow since at least 900 bc as evidenced by the recent finding of a hut and cooking pit (Fulach Fiadh) from a period 300 hundred years before the arrival of the Celts. Wicklow Town’s long history includes early Europeans, Celts, Vikings, Normans, English and of course the sailors from around the world, all of whom have added their influences in the development of modern Wicklow Town and Harbour.

The annual Regatta Festival of sea rowing skiff races and which includes many many events has been running for 138 years back as far as the era of the tall ships. The international Round Ireland sailing race which attracts yachts from all over Europe is run by Wicklow Sailing Club. It takes place every two year and the first race was in 1980.

Seafaring is a vital part of Wicklow even to the present day.   Wicklow’s Captain Robert Halpin of the ship the Great Eastern laid transatlantic telegraph cables across the Atlantic Ocean in the 19th century and his monument can be seen in Fitzwilliam square.
Wicklow Sea Swimming club is more than hundred years old. Every Sunday and Wednesday during the summer the club holds races with hundreds of participants swimming in races of over 1 kilometre.

The town also has many land based festivals
Saint Patricks Day festival with its famous parade frequently includes members from our twin towns.  We have had bands, jugglers and dancers.
During the summer we have Wicklow Arts festival with artists, musicians and yarn bombing amongst a variety of crafts displays.
The Secret garden music festival is also on in the summer.
A Taste of Wicklow is a festival of food which has more than ten thousand visitors and is a huge success.

On a clear day the scenery is breathtaking and on a wet day we can enjoy any of the Wicklow local restaurants or the pub music culture or you can go step dancing at the Old Boat House.
